HONE Mirror Finish is an optional finishing system for an edge that is already sharp. Its 5-, 3-, and 1-micron lapping films progressively refine the bevel toward a smoother, more reflective finish.

5 micron / #4500
The starting polishing grade in this set. Use it after sharpening to refine the remaining fine scratch pattern and prepare the bevel for the smaller abrasives.
3 micron / #8000
The intermediate polishing stage. Refines the marks left by the 5-micron film, making the bevel's surface progressively smoother before the final grade.
1 micron / #14000
The finest film in the set. Use after 3 micron for the final fine-polishing stage, working toward a more reflective bevel rather than repairing or reshaping the edge.
Polish an established edge, not a damaged one.
Diamond discs do the sharpening work: repairing wear, establishing the bevel, and refining the edge. Mirror Finish comes afterward, when you want additional surface refinement beyond your normal sharpening and honing routine. It is not intended to remove chips or restore a very dull knife.
A finer finish is an optional next step.
A practical progression is diamond sharpening, ceramic honing, then 5-, 3-, and 1-micron films. Complete the work at each grade before moving finer; the finest film will not quickly remove deep scratches. Results depend on the starting bevel, steel, angle consistency, and technique. A reflective bevel alone does not guarantee a sharp cutting edge.

Prepare the disc and edge
Sharpen the knife first. Peel off a film's adhesive backing and attach it smoothly to a supplied metal disc, then fit the disc to your HONE Roller. Films can be mounted on both sides of the metal disc.
Work from 5 to 3 to 1 micron
Keep the sharpening angle consistent and use light, controlled passes. Refine the previous scratch pattern before changing grades, and wipe the blade clean between stages to avoid carrying coarser particles onto a finer film.
Clean and reuse
Clean the films with a damp cloth or paper towel and keep the grades separate in the case. The films are reusable after cleaning. Their naturally smooth feel does not by itself mean they are worn out.
