The #400 Diamond Disc is HONE's main initial-sharpening grit. Use it to restore an ordinary dull edge and establish a consistent bevel before refining with #1000. This grit is included in the standard HONE sharpening kit.

#400 does the initial sharpening work when a knife is too dull for a simple finishing touch-up. It removes worn edge material and prepares the bevel for finer abrasion; it is not intended to be the final polished finish.
Start here when coarse repair is unnecessary.
Most normal initial sharpening can begin at #400 without using #200. Continue to #1000, or add #700 between them for a more gradual progression. For an already sharp knife, use a finer maintenance stage instead.

Choose the starting grit
Begin with #400 for an ordinary dull edge. Use #200 first only if repair or substantial reshaping is needed.
Establish the edge
Keep a consistent angle and use light, even pressure along the cutting edge, following HONE's instructions for your knife.
Refine with #1000
Move to #1000 once the initial sharpening is complete. #700 is an optional step between them; #3000 ceramic follows for finishing.
